Greece-Saudi Arabia Parliamentary Friendship Group Bureau meets with Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Athens

A meeting with the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Athens Dr Saad Alammar held today at the Parliament the members of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Greece-Saudi Arabia, Giannis Oikonomou, Chairman, Vaseilios Giogiakas, Vice-Chairman and Ahmed Ilhan, Secretary.

The meeting focused on the long-standing relations of cooperation between the two countries and the common understanding on major geopolitical issues, such as the unrest in the Middle East.

During the meeting, Mr Oikonomou referred to the excellent relations between Greece and Saudi Arabia, as proven by the recent exchange of visits at the highest level.

Exchange of visits that led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in order to establish a High Level Council for Strategic Cooperation, focusing on the areas of investment, energy and telecommunications.

Mr Oikonomou praised the convergence of views between the two countries with regard to the situation in the Middle East. Views, which point to peace, stability and prosperity as a framework to solve the geopolitical issues of the region and attach particular importance to the deepening of the relations between the two countries.  At the same time, he described the Parliamentary Friendship Groups as an agent for the development of bilateral cooperation.

Mr Ahmet Ilhan, as the representative of the Muslims in Greece at the Hellenic Parliament, invited the Ambassador, in the context of the cooperation between the two countries, to discuss the issues of the Muslim minority in Greece, assuring him of the progress that has been made in recent years in the direction of improving the overall living conditions.

From his side, Dr Saad Alammar referred to the longstanding diplomatic relations between Greece and Saudi Arabia, which date back to 1926.

He thanked Greece for its support to Saudi Arabia in international forums, referring in particular to Greece's recent positive vote to award the assignment of EXPO 2030 to Riyadh and stated that in the context of the Saudi Vision 2030 economic transformation programme, Greece is expected to play an important role in many areas of its economic transformation.   

Everyone described the meeting as a starting point for a systematic future cooperation, with the first step the official visit of a Greek parliamentary delegation to Saudi Arabia.
