Nikitas Kaklamanis: "Parliamentary cooperation is the foundation for a more united and resilient region" President of Hellenic Parliament chairs 19th Conference of Presidents of Parliament of Adriatic & Ionian Initiative countries

Mr. N. Kaklamanis declared the opening of the XIX Conference of Presidents and Speakers of Parliaments of the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative (AII), hosted in Ioannina under the Greek Presidency for the fourth time. He spoke about the importance of this meeting amid extreme geopolitical instability, stressing: a) the need for regional cooperation, b) confidence building, c) strengthening political dialogue, and d) the immediate ceasefire and peace in war-torn regions (e.g., Ukraine, Gaza).
In the first thematic session, focused on the European perspective of the Western Balkans, Mr. Kaklamanis emphasised maintaining the credibility and momentum of European enlargement as a strategic choice for peace and stability. He also highlighted Greece’s support for the countries of the region in aligning with the European acquis. Regarding the second theme, tourism development in the Adriatic-Ionian region, he underlined the need for sustainable, innovative models that respect the environment and cultural heritage and promote responsible tourism. The conference concluded with bilateral meetings between the President of the Parliament and representatives from Albania and Montenegro.
