Hellenic Parliament represented at Inter-parliamentary Meeting of European Parliament Committee on Petitions

The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice Lazaros Tsavdaridis, participated on Wednesday, 20 September 2023, in a inter-parliamentary meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels, on the cooperation with the committees on petitions in national parliaments and the exchange of best practices. The meeting was organised by the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions (PETI).
Mr Tsavdaridis said that the Hellenic Parliament does not have a special committee on petitions, however, every citizen or group of citizens have the right to address written petitions to the Parliament that contain requests or complaints. The petitions are presented by an MP or delivered to the President of the Hellenic Parliament.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the MPs who wish to adopt the petition sign it when it is submitted or declare so when it is announced to the Parliament. The Minister to whom the petition is forwarded must reply to the Parliament within twenty five days from its submission, while simultaneously notifying the MPs that had adopted the petition and the citizen who submitted it.
Mr Tsavdaridis summed up by saying that the Hellenic Parliament is especially interested to strengthen the role of the citizens in parliamentary scrutiny and, therefore, considers the exchange of best practices between parliaments invaluable.
