A courtesy meeting between the Chairman of the Greece-Mexico Friendship Group Periklis Mantas and the new Ambassador of Mexico to Athens Alejandro Garcia Moreno, was held today at the Hellenic Parliament.

Mr Mantas, after welcoming the Ambassador, referred to the recent visit of members of the Greece-Mexico Parliamentary Friendship Group to Athens, during which issues of economic growth, business activity, culture and education were extensively discussed. He described the establishment of a Chamber of Commerce of Greek and Mexican companies as an initiative of great importance, a development that is expected to strengthen the trade relations between the two countries. In addition, Mr Mantas said that the primary agricultural sector could be a field for more intense trade exchanges between the two countries.

Taking the floor, the Ambassador, after thanking for the warm welcome and the hospitality extended to the members of the Greece-Mexico Friendship Group last February, characterized this visit as "historic", because it laid the foundations for strengthening and expanding the cooperation between Greece and Mexico, and praised the importance of the establishment of a Greek-Mexican Chamber of Commerce. Thereafter, he pledged Mexico's full and practical support to Greece's struggle for the return of the Parthenon marbles and expressed his desire to follow closely all the initiatives for the repatriation of cultural heritage monuments, given that Mexico is also facing issues of the same nature. In the tourism sector, highlighting Mexico's desire to develop tourism on its islands, he called for the transfer of the expertise from Greece, particularly on issues related to coastal shipping and passenger shipping.

Both participants in the meeting, highlighted the cultural and historical similarities of the two peoples, among others in the way they gained their independence. They agreed on taking joint initiatives for the twinning of the city of Kalavryta with the city of Dolores Hidalgo of Mexico, as cities from which the national liberation struggle of each people began, and also for the celebration of the 85 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
