Greece-Estonia Parliamentary Friendship Groups meet via teleconference
The 2nd Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament and Chairman of the Greece-Estonia Friendship Group Charalampos Athanasiou held an online meeting with his counterpart, Chairwoman of the relevant Friendship Group of the Estonian Parliament Annely Akkermann, on the occasion of the 99 years since our country recognised the Independence of Estonia.
The following also participated in the meeting: the Deputy Chair of the Friendship Group Athanasios Lioupis, the Ambassador of Greece in Talin Emmanouil Apostolakis, the Ambassador of Estonia in Athens, Priit Pallum and the Diplomatic Advisor of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Economides.
The issues discussed during the teleconference were:
- The already close ties of friendship and cooperation between Greece and Estonia, partners in the EU and NATO.
- How to further develop relations and cooperation in a mutual and beneficial way, especially in the field of the economy, trade, energy, digital technology, shipping, green growth and tourism.
- The signing of the Memorandum on Digital Cooperation between the two countries, which is eagerly anticipated and expected to conclude soon, especially since Estonia holds a prominent position in the field of digitalisation and integrating new technologies in Public Administration.
- The common understanding in Greece and Estonia of the challenges that the two countries face in regions of common interest and the need to show solidarity in the face of these challenges.
- The need for support and cooperation between the two countries during the pandemic the international community is facing.
- The fact that both countries addressed the healthcare crisis in the best possible way and demonstrably so.
Summing up, the two Chairpersons agreed that communication between the two parliaments via meetings and teleconferences strengthens bilateral dialogue and cooperation.
