Meeting of Chairman of Greece - Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group with Vice-President of Brazil

Initiatives to address the global problem of climate change, but also issues of mutual interest of the two countries were the focus of today’s meeting of the Chairman of the Greece – Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group Maximos Senetakis with the Vice-President of Brazil Hamilton Martins Mourão, who visited the Hellenic Parliament.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Chair of the Greece – Brazil Friendship Group Giannis Mouzalas, while the Vice-President of Brazil was accompanied by the Ambassador of Brazil in our country Robert Abdalla.

Mr. Senetakis welcomed Mr. Mourão to the Hellenic Parliament emphasising the traditional friendship between the two countries and the very good level of bilateral relations, formed by Brazil’s support for the resolution of the Cyprus issue based on International Law and the Decisions of the UN. Mr. Mouzalas noted that despite the great geographical distance, the two peoples share similar ideas, idiosyncracies and offer support to one another.

The Vice-President of Brazil informed the Greeks MPs about his country’s actions on the issue of climate change, noting that “Brazil is responsible for 13% of global greenhouse gas emissions, most of which are caused by illegal deforestation and logging in the Amazon region”, while he underlined the Brazilian government’s commitment to eliminate this problem by 2030.

“It is a field that concerns us all,” noted Mr. Senetakis referring to both the deforestation of the Amazon and the global problem of wildfires, and expressed the satisfaction of the Greek side vis-à-vis the goals to prevent climate change, such as halting deforestation by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050, that have been set both by the European Commission and Brazil.

The Chairman of the Greece – Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group also referred to the prospects of strengthening cooperation in a number of sectors, such as industry, agriculture, shipping, tourism, while emphasising the important role of the Greek diaspora living in Brazil and active there, as well as of the ca. 3.000 Brazilian citizens living in Greece.
