Parliamentary Activities

Member of Parliament, PASOK representing: Athens’ First Electoral District (2007, 2009), National Ballot (2004), Kozani (1996).
Anna participates in the Permanent Parliamentary Committees for Educational Affairs and for European Affairs.
She has also served as member of the Parliamentary Committees for Defence and Foreign Affairs, Production and Trade, Economic Affairs as well as Vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for the EU Constitutional Treaty.

Political/Social Activities

Political representative of PASOK on Education and Religious Affairs. Member of PASOK’s National Council.
European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs (1999-2004). Her tenure at the Commission was marked by the adoption of the Social Policy Agenda, the promotion of legislation against discrimination in the workplace and against exclusion, the formulation of the European strategy for employment, the agreement on the White Paper on Companies’ Social Responsibility (CSR), the establishment of the EU Health Card, etc.
Anna has also served as Deputy Minister of Development (1996-1999), Secretary-General for Industry (1994-1996).Br> President of the HOSMEH (1993-1994), Secretary-General for Youth and Adult Education (1987-1989), Prefect of Kastoria (1985-1987).
She was a member of PASOK’S Central Committee since 1990 and in its Political Council from 2005-2008.
She has also worked as a civil engineer (1981-1985), and as CEO of a Regional Development Company.
Anna has been honoured by the President of the French Republic with the Medal of the Legion of Honour and with a special award by the Danish Presidency of the EU in 2002.
