Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy commemorates Greek-speaking Romaniote Jews and Esther Cohen

The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy is organising on Thursday 4 February 2021 at 19:00 an online event on the theme: “Romaniote Art. A commemoration of Esther Cohen”.

The welcome address will be by the President of the Hellenic Parliament and President of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation on Parliamentarism and Democracy, Constantine An. Tassoulas.

With Ioannina as the indisputable centre of the Romaniote community and with their long-standing history, Greek-speaking Romaniotes created the unique Greek-Jewish tradition, assimilating elements of local popular culture and combining them in a creative manner with their own customs and traditions. They preserved their religious identity, as evidenced by the synagogues they built and the survival of Hebrew as a language of worship.

The event, which is taking place with the contribution of the Jewish Museum of Greece commemorates the life of Ioannina native Esther Cohen, one of the last Greek women to have survived the Holocaust, who died on 1 December 2020. It includes presentations and testimonies on the historic journey, daily life, art and music of the Romaniotes.

The event will be broadcast live from the Senate Hall of the Hellenic Parliament via the Hellenic Parliament Foundation's website. You can also watch the event via the Hellenic Parliament TV online platform (WebTV-2).
