Hellenic Parliament illuminated on occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilites the message “Nothing for us, without us. Equality – Participation - Dignity“ was displayed on the facade of the Hellenic Parliament. The 3rd of December was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1992 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is being observed as the National Day for Persons with Disabilities as well, so that Governments, Organizations and societies can focus their attention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

In this direction, the Hellenic Parliament held a discussion for the first time on an organized action plan on disabilities, engaging all Ministries, in a way that is in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This action plan is based on six pillars and refers to specific actions that will bring about a paradigm shift in how public policies and society treat our fellow citizens with disabilities and has been approved by the Standing Committee on Social Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament and the Special Permanent Committee on Equality and Human Rights.

The six pillars are the following:
- The State will be at the service of Persons with Disabilities. This includes, inter alia, the codification of the labyrinthine legislation, the establishment of a National Accessibility Authority, a disability e-card, the updating of the mechanism for the determination  and certification of a disability
- Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, e.g. special tax policy, deinstitutionalization, independent living etc.
- Accessibility
- Participation in all aspects of life
- Awareness-raising among the society and Public Administration
- Synergy and Development
