Joint committee meeting of European Parliament and National Parliaments on challenges faced by those fleeing Ukraine

A joint session of three Committees of the European Parliament (Women's Rights and Gender Equality, Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and Employment and Social Affairs) with members of National Parliaments took place today, on the challenges faced by those fleeing due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The discussion focused mainly on women and children and the EU’s policy responses on the matter. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by the Chairwoman of the Equality, Youth and Human Rights committee Anna Karamanli.

Mrs Anna Karamanli stressed, inter alia, that Greece, from the first instance of the war, along with its partners, has supported Ukrainian refugees, implementing the EU Directive on temporary protection. In particular, for the security and the rights of women refugees, taking into account that they constitute the majority of the refugee flow, the Network of Structures to prevent and combat violence against women was activated, free access to medical care was provided, while special care has been taken to provide housing to women refugees and their children.

Mrs Karamanli also referred to actions for the integration of Ukrainian children and refugees into the Greek educational system, where children can be registered and where there are special Greek language learning courses provided. Lastly, in collaboration with UNICEF information and educational material has been translated.
